Social/Community Based Mentoring
Engaging Hearts to Enrich Lives through Mentoring
By definition 'mentor' means "a wise and trusted friend and guide."
Mentoring is one of the most significant ways you can make
a positive and lasting impact in a young persons life. No special skills are needed, just a caring heart and willingness to
share your time with a young person who may need a friend and guide.
Mentors are the heart & soul of Kettle Kinship's mentoring
programs, as they are directly involved with the local youth.
Mentors can be an individual adult, couple or family, and are matched
with a mentee based on interests and location. Social mentors commit to a minimum of an hour per week for one year.
Many matches enjoy
their friendship so much they continue for years!
We also have a "Mentor for a Day" program which involves mentoring a child on our
waiting list at one or more of our monthly group activities.
Mentor one child, enrich two lives!
Benefits:
- Nurtures young people's skills
and capacities, including: social skills, vocational interests, and civic responsibility
- Helps protect youth from violence and other
dangerous or negative influences
- Promotes healthy intergenerational peer interaction in which each exerts a positive influence on
the other
- Provides opportunities for children and youth to contribute to their communities and society
- Gives mentees and mentors a
sense of belonging in the community
- Provides support and friendship through a non-family member adult
- Creates environments that promote
the positive and healthy development of all youth
- Reduces rural isolation
"My mentor is there, not because he has to be, or because he's being paid to be, but just because he wants to be, that makes all the
difference!"
